Call for Artists

5 Points Gallery is currently accepting submissions for artist members to join our collective. The gallery is located at 109 East Chapel Hill Street in the vibrant 5 Points area of downtown Durham and currently is made up of 9 contemporary artists. Members exhibit work in a light-filled space with high ceilings, white walls and glass storefront windows. Members are supported by a community of fellow artists and participate directly in the gallery’s operation. Member art is featured on our website, social media and gallery newsletter. 5 Points Gallery is a popular destination for Durham’s monthly Third Friday Art Walk events and is known as a location to purchase high quality original art.

Member responsibilities include attending monthly meetings and fulfilling assigned gallery duties, working in the gallery 3-4 times each month for a 3-4 hour shift, and participating in Durham’s monthly Third Friday art walk and other special events in downtown Durham as they arise. Artists pay monthly dues/rent of approximately $300/month plus a 20% commission of all sales through 5 Points Gallery. Members retain 80% of their sales. Monthly dues/rent is determined by the cost of monthly gallery rent (determined yearly by the Landlord) and approved by the Gallery Collective. All new members are required to submit a one-time fee of $250.

We welcome local artists living and working in the Durham-Raleigh-Chapel Hill area to apply for membership. In this competitive process, new artist members will be chosen by a full majority vote of existing members. The Call is open to artists in the following media: painting, mixed media, sculpture (that can be displayed on pedestals, hung from above or set on the floor), printmaking, and photography. Following are the guidelines for application to join our gallery.

To apply, please submit the following to info@5pointsgallery.com with “Artist Submission” in the Subject Line and include the following information:

  • A brief statement explaining your interest and motivation in joining our gallery
  • Name/Address/Telephone/Email
  • Artist Statement/Bio
  • 5 JPG images of recent 2D work; 2-3 images per piece (5 pieces total) for recent 3-D works, labeled as follows: LastnameFirstName_ArtworkTitle.JPG
  • Identification sheet listing artwork title, media, dimensions, and year completed.

This Call for Artists is effective November 15, 2021, with a jury selection process taking place as the applications arrive. All applicants will be notified by Friday, January 28, 2022 as to the status of their application. A selection of applicants will be asked to participate in an interview with the current member artists. New collective artists, if selected, will be announced in February 2022. Applicants will be judged primarily on their artwork, but artists that are traditionally under-represented in the visual arts are encouraged to apply. All qualified applicants will be considered without regard to race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or national origin.

What are we looking for? Artists with a good balance of these strengths:

  1. A strong and professional body of artwork.
  2. Must be reliable, hard-working, and committed to our gallery’s platform.
  3. Have good communication stills and a pleasant presence, which is needed for working gallery shifts, interacting with customers, and of course, selling art!
  4. Be respectful of others and work well within our current diverse group of dynamic artists.
  5. Website knowledge/experience is a plus.
